AVR Butterfly Used for Building Polyphemus

AVR Butterfly Used for Building Polyphemus

Overview

The Polyphemus project is an ATmega168 demo kit which was named after the attractive giant silk mothe with hind wings having large and colorful eyespots.

Details

Along with the ATmega168 microcontroller used in the circuit are the analog input connector, compact 3x3 inch handheld form factor, FTDI USB programming connector, 3.7V rechargeable lithium battery, piezoelectric buzzer, phototransistor, white LED, two multi-state pushbuttons, and Nokia 6100 LCD.

The Nokia 6100 colored LCD is used to display the user interface for Polyphemus. There are no additional power regulators required since it uses 3.7V battery to power the device. The Freeduino and white LED power supply will not need DC-DC boost converter on their operation. The menu on the LCD can be moved using one pushbutton and the other can be used to pick a selection. The built-in functions that can be chosen from include the Voltmeter for testing power connections, the Light sensor for sampling ambient light readings, and the Flashlight for turning ON/OFF the white LED.

Two pieces of perfboard are used where one holds the phototransistor, battery holder, Freeduino, LED and the other holds the power switch, analog connector, buzzer, pushbuttons, and LCD.
