Overview

The remote controlled helicopter was built on Lite Machines 110 which is an ideal platform for debugging both the autopilot and the command & control software.

Explanation

The prototype has the servo controller connected to a laptop through a light serial cable instead of having all the hardware onboard. This would limit the functionality of the UAV but will allow for easy debugging and off loads the underpowered LM-110 since it can barely carry the camera, full fuel, servo controller and battery.

A great beginning helicopter is the Lite Machine although it lacked the payload capacity for the full onboard system and autopilot which requires a larger model. The Kyosho Concept 60 has a 10cc engine and a payload capacity of 4kg. the rotor diameter of the Concept 60 is over twice that of the LMH which leads to over four times the blade area and lifting surface. Since its height is quite taller, the engine heatsink on the LMH can be seen clearly.

The AVR Mega103 microcontroller handles the real-time tasks onboard and contains 64 I/O lines, PWM output, a UART, and GCC support. These features make a great development environment in prototyping board.
